Hello, I have a small question. I adore your graphite pieces and the amount of sensitivity in your lines and values. What is the softest pencil you end up using? I tend to start with a 4H and maybe end with a 2H, but I never feel like the right range of value is achieved. Would you say it is more about layering lines or pencil pressure?
first off, this question rocks. second, i’ve found the softer the pencil, the closer it is to B. B pencils tend to be waxier/darker/softer, while H pencils tend to be harder and lighter. i generally use a 4H but depending on what value i’m placing i use 6H too. it’s really just about being sensitive and observational of the tones you’re applying. i do build more in the shadow/darks of course, but i never use anything higher than a 2H for these drawings.
